Students with High Functioning Autism (HFA), ADHD & Learning Difficulties (LD) have specific learning styles and learning needs. They can also present with complex and challenging behaviours. As educators the 'challenge' in challenging behaviours is ours. We are challenged to understand the functional and communicative purpose of the behaviour for the student, and to teach more socially appropriate alternatives. This workshop will address how to do this within our schools.

This one-day workshop gives an overview of what the term diversity really means. It shares the principles of inclusion, and how brain research is helping teachers to understand the complexities of how children learn. Participants will hear how executive skills impact on learning and social engagement, and learn simple ways to teach to address them, along with strategies that can be applied to create a brain-friendly classroom.

Participants will engage in professional conversations, reflective activities and role plays as we address the statistics, facts, myths, and the suicide continuum.  Learn about protective and risk factors, warning signs, and the profile of a person at risk of suicide. Discover how to have 'the conversation'  (what to say, and what not to say),  how to link in with appropriate support services, and ensuring you look after yourself during the process.

Research has shown that students with ASD are considered to be 90% visual processors and 10% auditory, suggesting that the way we deliver information to students is crucial to learning. Students with ASD are more likely to grasp the main idea of an instruction when provided with a visual support as it assists their language needs, memory, temporal/sequential skills and social skills. This workshop will explore how to develop and use inclusive visual supports that are adapted to match the student’s skill set, increasing engagement and independence.

Through a brain-based, therapeutic, and educational understanding, participants will discover a range of simple, just-in-time strategies to help students facing these challenges to improve their wellbeing and learning.

Challenging behaviour has a huge impact on the individual, the class, and the teacher. It can create stress and affect the learning and/or wellbeing of all involved. These behaviours require our care and an understanding of their communicative need and deeper causation. This allows for strategies and approaches to be adapted that meet and change the cause of the behaviour, instead of managing the symptoms.

This workshop supports professionals to combine an educational and psychological approach to their practice to support all learners to thrive.

With Phonemic awareness incorporated into the National English Curriculum, and the heavy body of research that identifies phonological and phonemic awareness as being one of the best predictors for early reading success, teachers needs to understand the important role these play in the literacy skills of students at risk or with learning difficulties. This workshop will provide teachers with both knowledge and practical experience to support such learners.
