Metacognitive Strategies that Work (HITS) F-12

Research has consistently shown that students who engage in metacognitive learning experiences have significant gains in their learning achievement, especially when combined with self-regulation. As educators, we need to know how to harness this learning opportunity and provide students with metacognitive strategies that work within different contexts. To do this, we need to address the key challenges when planning for successful implementation of metacognition within the instructional process. For example: How do we ensure metacognition is meaningful and purposeful within a short instructional time frame? How do we support students to value this part of the learning process and be motivated to continually produce quality outcomes? How do we successfully combine metacognition with self-regulation practices to improve results? This workshop addresses these issues with practical, engaging and relevant metacognitive learning experiences, including combining other high-impact teaching strategies to support diverse learning needs.

Workshop Overview:

Classroom teachers, curriculum leaders and learning specialists will engage in practical metacognitive strategies and worked examples they can use to support the developmental needs of their learners. They will participate in professional discussions, hands-on learning experiences, and engage in their own metacognitive processes. They will also have opportunities to improve their current practices and plan new approaches they can use immediately with their students.

 This full day digital learning in Literacy workshop will allow educators to successfully:

  • Understand what purposeful and effective metacognitive strategies are;

  • Recognise the relationship between metacognition and self-regulation and how to harness these to continually improve learning and wellbeing;

  • Engage with a variety of multimodal tools that motivate students to participate in metacognitive learning experiences;

  • Access relevant metacognition and self-regulation resources to support their students’ diverse learning needs within their own teaching context.
