Metacognitive Strategies that Work (HITS) F-12

Research has consistently shown that students who engage in metacognitive learning experiences have significant gains in their learning achievement, especially when combined with self-regulation. As educators, we need to know how to harness this learning opportunity and provide students with metacognitive strategies that work within different contexts. To do this, we need to address the key challenges when planning for successful implementation of metacognition within the instructional process. For example: How do we ensure metacognition is meaningful and purposeful within a short instructional time frame? How do we support students to value this part of the learning process and be motivated to continually produce quality outcomes? How do we successfully combine metacognition with self-regulation practices to improve results? This workshop addresses these issues with practical, engaging and relevant metacognitive learning experiences, including combining other high-impact teaching strategies to support diverse learning needs.
