Challenging Behaviour, Trauma & Diverse Needs: A Wellbeing Approach (Primary) (September 2017, VIC)

Challenging Behaviour, Trauma & Diverse Needs: A Wellbeing Approach (Primary) (September 2017, VIC)

Are you facing a challenging classroom or set of behaviours? Are you seeking new ways to reconnect students to their learning and to support their wellbeing?

Challenging behaviour has a huge impact on the individual, the class, and the teacher. It can create stress and affect the learning and/or wellbeing of all involved. These behaviours require our care and an understanding of their communicative need and deeper causation. This allows for strategies and approaches to be adapted that meet and change the cause of the behaviour, instead of managing the symptoms.

Every student, in particular a student in need, requires an understanding approach and experiences that nurture and empower them to learn, take risks and improve their wellbeing.

Workshop Overview:

This workshop supports professionals to combine an educational and psychological approach to their practice to support all learners to thrive.

Participants will discover practical strategies every educator and support professional can utilise to support students dealing with diverse, compromised and special circumstances e.g. trauma, anxiety, family breakdown, chronic illness, learning difficulties, loss & grief, and diagnoses such as ADHD, ASD, OCD & ODD.

This workshop will allow participants to understand:

  • Behaviour as a form of communication, and how to discuss this in a language you can use with young people;
  • Behavioural assessments and introduction to the SPICE elements as an effective and holistic assessment, strategy and planning tool;
  • Implicit and explicit strategies, and approaches that develop students’ SPICE elements and improve learning and wellbeing outcomes;
  • Targeted strategies to respond to children’s more tricky emotions: such as aggression, anxiety, grief and fear;
  • Using mindfulness in a kindergarten and primary school classroom;
  • Brain based understanding and strategies that support growth;
  • Supporting the diverse needs of students and specific cases such as ODD, trauma, chronic illness etc;
  • Creating safe learning spaces so students can thrive;
  • Develop targeted strategies for a specific student.
